Äventyrsspel: Bland mutanter, drakar och demoner är en mycket lyxig bok. Varje uppslag dränks av stora bilder från Äventyrsspelprodukter som väcker minnen till liv. Man kan sitta länge i läsfåtöljen och bara njuta av bilderna. Orvar Säfström och Jimmy Wilhelmsson har satt ihop en riktigt ordentlig kaffebordsbok som kan ligga framme och glänsa, även om det till viss del beror på att dess stora format gör att den inte får plats i någon av mina bokhyllor.

Äventyrsspel dominerade stort den svenska marknaden för rollspel under 80- och 90-talen. De låg bakom Drakar och Demoner, Mutant, Kult och andra gamla fina svenska rollspelstitlar. Boken berättar om hur företaget bildades, och hur de olika produkterna kom till. Huvudstrukturen i boken är tematisk, och inom varje tema går boken kronologiskt framåt vilket är ett fungerande upplägg i sammanhanget. Själva historieskrivandet sker genom att ett stort antal av de inblandade personerna får ge korta uttalanden för att allt tillsammans ska ge en bild av hur det gick till och hur stämningen var då det begav sig. Den modellen gör att många uttalanden kan vara ryckta ur sitt sammanhang, men det kan man inte veta eftersom man inte får något sammanhang att relatera dem till. Man vet inte vad intervjuaren har sagt för att få de svar som man får läsa. Det gör att i alla fall jag inte känner att jag till fullo kan lita på texten.

Det är hur som helst intressant att läsa om hur ett gäng rollspelare som spelat de amerikanska rollspelen inser att tiden är mogen för att rollspel ska slå stort även i Sverige. De skyndar sig att skapa Drakar och Demoner för att hinna före en Sverige-lansering av det annars världsdominerande Dungeons & Dragons och bygger på ett förvånande taffligt och amatörmässigt sätt upp ett svenskt spelimperium som höll ihop och var framgångsrikt fram till finanskrisen på 90-talet. Intressant på ett mycket mer positivt sätt är det att läsa om hur världarna och spelsystemen byggdes upp och om illustratörernas roll i spelen och äventyren. Det är ju ändå de delarna av Äventyrsspel som man minns, och det är nostalgin som är bokens i särklass starkaste kort.

In space, when making epic voyages, it is important to choose a sufficiently epic transportation. In the comic book The 6 Voyages of Lone Sloane by Philippe Druillet the protagonist travels through space and dimensions using a stone throne, a gigantic organ and a dragon. Sloane is a space pilot that is captured by a mystic entity and imbued with strange powers when his space ship is destroyed. He has thus turned exceptionally powerful but he has also completely lost control of his own fate, and it seems that the full universe is against him. He is Lone Sloane.

The art and storyline in The 6 Voyages of Lone Sloane consist of a mixture of old-fashioned space opera, even older-fashioned lovecraftian horror and then-contemporary (~1970) psychedelia. The drama is over-the-top without a single hint of irony and this is refreshing. Lone Sloane ponders about his position in cosmos and the impact from trans-dimensional dark metaphysics surrounded by colourful explosions and intricate complexities in the narrative.

I found the story difficult to follow, partly due to the disparity between the cosmic size of the story and the few pages on which it is told and partly since I read the book in bed just before going to sleep. Thus, I need to re-read the book, but I do not really mind. I actually look forward to once more dive into the polychromatic unknown to experience Lone Sloane with fresh eyes.

An easy assumption is that the story in the sequel to The Magicians by Lev Grossman would start where the first book ends, in particular since it ended with some sort of cliff-hanger, but it seems that Grossman avoids the obvious whenever possible. Instead, The Magician King begins somewhat later with Quentin Coldwater as a well established co-ruler of a magic kingdom.

Quentin is bored and is thus looking for a quest, since quests are what heroes spend their time on, and he wants to be the hero of the story. He rather arbitrarily refurbishes a ship and sets sail to the Outer Island to collect a small amount of tax money. This is actually the starting of a complex quest which whole point is unknown for a large part of the story.

The magician king also tells the tragic story about the one who did not pass the entrance tests to Brakebills, the magic academy from the first book, and who learns to perform magic anyway in potentially the hardest way possible. This one is another co-ruler of the magic kingdom, but appears to broken as a human.

It turned out that I liked the book. This was a bit unexpected because I was not particularly fond of the first book, and started reading this one only thanks to the cliff-hanger ending of the first one. The story is significantly more coherent and it felt as if the characters have matured – not in the sense that they are older (they are of course), but that they are more realistically described. They are more human, and in some cases more unhuman. Now they have personalities and not just personality sketches. The aspects I liked of the first book, its originality and its unpredictability, are still present making this book an enjoyable read for me.

Now I am curious how many other cases there are of books that I dislike which have sequels that I like. There may be many potential favourite readings hiding behind a poor first book. Interesting…

Man kan tycka att 12 år är ganska kort tid när det handlar om böcker, men Vem har snott mitt land? av Michael Moore känns redan efter ett dussin år förvånansvärt inaktuell. Det är givetvis en naturlig följd av att boken förstås var brännande aktuell när det begav sig.

Vem har snott mitt land? berör politik och storfinans i USA i allmänhet, och George W Bush i synnerhet, och det är inga positiva omdömen som ges. Patriot Act och Irak-kriget kritiseras också ordentligt, liksom presidentens olje- och vänskapsförhållanden med terrorfinansiärer. Moore ger också en del praktiska råd om hur man talar med sin konservative svåger för att få matfrid under familjemiddagarna, och hur man bäst ser till att Bush inte får en period till som president. Det är det sistnämnda som är huvudsyftet med boken. Det är tydligt att Moore verkligen vill att Amerika ska öppna ögonen för hur dålig Bush är för landet. Tyvärr så blev det fyra år till med Bush för de stackars jänkarna, så boken fyllde inte sitt syfte till slut.

Boken är skriven i en ledig satirisk stil, som tyvärr verkar ha blivit lite kantstött under översättningsprocessen. Ovanligt nog, för en bok i den här stilen, finns det en rejäl uppsättning referenser längst bak i boken så att man får se att de många konspirationsidéerna som dyker upp i texten går att kontrollera på egen hand. I dagens upplysta tillvaro kan man också via WikiLeaks se att mycket av det som antyds och spekuleras om i boken faktiskt också var på riktigt. Det är faktiskt rätt skrämmande.

The story begins when Quentin Coldwater, a successful high-school student, goes to a house in Brooklyn for his entrance interview to Princeton. His interviewer turns out to be rather dead. During the interactions with the ambulance personel Quentin gets hold of a strange envelope with his name on it. The envelope contains, among other things, a notebook with the script to a book: “The Magicians – Book 6 of Fillory and Further”. Quentin loves that book series, but is confused because there are only five books in it. Somehow this event leads to Quentin being tested for, and later accepted into, Brakebills, which is a school for magicians, instead of Princeton. Quentin doesn’t mind.

It would be easy to say that The Magicians by Lev Grossman is yet another book about young people studying magic in a secret school unaccessible by the general public. It would also be easy to say that it is yet another book about young people exploring parallel worlds. However, I think I would stress that The Magicians is a story about how talented brats behave when they may tap into potentially almost unlimited power.

The tempo of the narrative is somewhat arhythmic with parts of the book where not much happens, and other parts where everything is hectic. Many characters are presented in the book, which is natural for a book about a school with teachers and classes, but some of them are presented in detail just to not appear in the rest of the book, and others suddenly come back into the story after being ignored for a long time. I feel that the story itself is disconnected, which the book itself seems to be aware of. Page 365 states:

This isn’t a story! It’s just one fucking thing after another!

which I would say is right on the spot, even if I would not have used the f-word…

Even though many of the themes may at first glance seem to be standard fantasy elements, The Magicians itself feels original. It is a fascinating book to read, and it is almost impossible to guess which direction the story will go at any point, to some degree thanks to its disconnectedness. The book is also filled with clever references to other books and films, which is good for people looking for clever references. For the rest of us it is a fascinating, and quite disturbing, text.

När Douglas Peterson väcks mitt i natten av sin fru, Connie, trodde han först att hon har hört inbrottstjuvar i huset. Istället ville hon meddela honom att hon börjat fundera på att lämna honom. Det var sommaren innan deras son, Albie, skulle flytta hemifrån för att börja sina högskolestudier. Som en sista ansträngning för att hålla ihop familjen organiserade Douglas en sista familjesemester, och inte vilken semester som helst utan en komplett allomfattande Europarundtur som skulle täcka in all klassisk konst i samma stil som de resor utflyttande klassiskt skolade pojkar skickades ut på under 1800-talet. En så ambitiös resan måste planeras med minutiös noggrannhet för att över huvud taget kunna bli av, och det var vad Douglas gjorde, men resten av familjen var inte lika entusiastisk.

I boken Vi av David Nicholls berättar Douglas om hur det gick med resan. Den berättelsen är blandad med hans minnen från när han träffade sin fru och deras drygt 20 år tillsammans, och bildar en (faktiskt) trevlig och sammanhållen inblick i huvudet på en man i kris. Förvånansvärt mycket i boken påminner mig om en av mina favoritfilmer, Ett päron till farsa på semester i Europa, men kryddat med en stark känsla av nostalgi och någon slags sorg.

Ur ett evolutionärt perspektiv fyller de flesta känslor – rädsla, lust, ilska – någon sorts funktion, men nostalgi är en värdelös, hopplös, känsla eftersom den innebär att man längtar efter något som för evigt har gått förlorat […]

Som sagt, boken är trevligt skriven, men jag kan inte riktigt förstå hur Douglas och Connie kunde bli ett par från början. Deras historia ihop känns förvisso som om den är på riktigt, men den initiala glöden verkar komma från ingenstans. Många av situationerna som uppstår på resan skulle jag också kunna säga upplevdes som lite väl konstruerade och krystade. De tillför inslag av fars som inte riktigt passar ihop med bokens stämning i övrigt. Men de här små anmärkningarna från mig är bara petitesser för bokens småtrevlighet är det som stannar kvar efter läsningen.

Det är trevligt.
