Shaun Tan is an artist, and author of books where the art is at the centre (such as the lovely Cicada). Creature is a collection of paintings from his production chosen by him to explain his own view of his art.

The book is divided into four main art themes: lost things, companions, myth and metaphor, and birds, but as noted by Tan, that are only different aspects of the overarching Creature. In general, Tan’s short commentary texts at the beginning of each chapter are very clear in the way they are going through inspiration and background related to the art. And, of course, the art is the main point of the book.

The art is beatiful. All these different creatures that are often too big, too small or to scary to seem useful but still has identity and a reason to exist. They seem to reside also in my dreams, because they feel so familiar but yet so weird. This makes Creature a very nice art book for me to just sit down and absorb the images, and slowly let my fantasy carry me away somewhere.

Kazuo Ishiguros roman Klara och Solen utspelar sig någonstans i USA i en inte alltför avlägsen framtid. Det mesta är faktiskt som det är just nu, men en viktig skillnad är att robotar har börjat användas för sällskapsrelationer. Bokens berättare Klara är just en sådan robot: en AV, artificiell vän. Visserligen är hon inte av den senaste modellen, men hon har ändå begåvats med en ovanligt skarp förmåga att iaktta och lära sig från det hon ser. Till att börja med står hon i ett skyltfönster och väntar på att något barn ska välja henne att ha till vän, och när den unga flickan Josie dyker upp så verkar Klara just ha fått sin människa. Efter en tid blir Klara köpt av Josies mamma just för att hålla henne sällskap, för Josie är mycket allvarligt sjuk. Därför kommer Klara att få en väldigt stor roll för Josie.

Det är fascinerande med en bok som har en så pass otillförlitlig berättare som Klara. Hon är utomordentligt duktig på att iaktta vad som sker omkring henne, men hon har inte alltid förmågan att koppla ihop allting i den stora helheten. Hennes blick på världen är ju begränsad till bara just det hon får se, så som det fina bokomslaget antyder. Därför är det inte så tydligt hur världen egentligen mår, men uppenbarligen har robotarnas intåg i vardagen skapat stor arbetslöshet, enorma strukturella klasskillnader, förfallna städer och miljöförstöring. Därmed finns det också stora motsättningar och spänningar i världen, men det sker bortom Klaras blick. För henne handlar allt om Josies väl, och om Solen. Han ger ju Klara energi genom sina strålar.

Klara är så snäll och välmenande, men också så naiv, att grundtonen i Klara och Solen blir ganska vemodig. Rollen för en AV är ju att under en tid vara en god vän till ett barn, men barn växer och förändras och även andra omständigheter gör att en AVs arbetsuppgift kan behöva förändras. Boken är egentligen en enkel historia, men hos mig satte den igång många grubblerier om vart man hamnar med välutvecklade artificiella intelligenser. Men visst vore det ändå skönt att kunna betrakta världen helt utan fördomar, även om det förmodligen är dem som gör oss till människor?

It seems that an educated man is expected be well versed in Greek mythology, at least in the western world. For me, however, the impression has been that it is just a long list of names of gods, half gods, creatures and people doing strange things for no obvious reasons. Stephen Fry’s book Mythos then seems to be a convenient way for me to reach the status of educated.

In Mythos Fry has collected a set of his favourite stories from the Greek traditions and retells them in a very good mood, keeping in line with the book’s subtitle The Greek Myths Retold. There are however no new interpretations; the stories are simply told once more. This was good news to me, because it turned out that I actually knew almost all stories from before, and therefore can consider myself pre-educated.

The book is rather useless as a reference book, because it jumps quite generously in time and tend to organise the stories in a loosely thematic manner. It makes the book feel like a session of the author telling anecdotes in the order they occur to him. And since the author is Stephen Fry, it is a very entertaining session. The selection of stories is certainly not complete, many constellations in the night sky are absent from the book, and it is also a bit unbalanced where some are significantly more fleshed out than others. Mythos is thus a bit messy to read, but it is an entertaining mess.
