The Bird King: An Artist’s Sketchbook is a collection of sketches by Shaun Tan, plus some comments, giving a bit of insight into his creative process. It is, for instance, interesting to see the story in Cicada, which I loved, as preliminary drawings and snippets.
I love Tan’s style of art, and his way of using it to tell stories. Since this book is a collection of sketches, we see unfinished art and story snippets only. This makes it possible to folloow the processes, but that also makes the collection lack a bit of coherence. It makes more sense to use the book as an addition to other works by Tan instead of a book on its own.
